Yellow Jacket Season

Several Wednesday Striders have been stung by yellow jackets recently. All indications are that this will be a bad season for yellow jackets. For years I have been extolling the virtues of household ammonia to treat yellow jacket stings. Here is a good article (of many) describing the use of this magical liquid and the mechanism by which it works.

The important thing is to keep a small container of ammonia in your pocked during a hike. Apply it immediately (if not sooner) to the sting(s). Apply a liberal amount. Don’t worry–it won’t burn the skin.
